Baby Snails

I found this little snail outside yesterday...she/he(garden snails are hermaphrodites) is obviously a survivor...it's shell was covered in maroon and white paint from last summer when we had the house painted before the wedding. I picked it up to check if it was just an abandoned shell or living snail...the snail was fast asleep but alive. Undernearh about an inch in the ground were translucent white eggs it had recently laid.

I put the snail back were I found it...today when I checked again the snail had completely filled and covered the hole and was now gone. This particular spot is obviously a bit of a snail nursery, as climbing up the walls directly above the unhatched eggs were a few dozen snail hatchings from another litter.

Even at such an early age these garden snails are quite curious...any that I photographed although initially weary all stared into and reached out to touch the camera lens.

I saved a bee!!

This morning while making some breakfast in the kitchen, I found a bumble bee drowning in a bucket of water outside the back door. I scooped him out, placed him on the window sill and very lightly blew on his wings in a desperate attempt to help dry them out...I then left him alone to finish drying in his own time, all the while keeping my fingers crossed that he'd pull through. Luckily after a half an hour or so he had dried off sufficiently and flew away...

I Won....Twice!

I've been so lucky this week! A few days ago I won two tickets for Paloma Faith's Iveagh Gardens Concert next week in Dublin. A text of mine was chosen as the best of the day on 2fm's Rick O'Shea show! AND Just now after a solid month of sending in any code I could find on promotional cans of Coke I just won a World Cup Adidas Jabulani football...I'm so happy!

I just noticed I use way to many exclamation marks! I'm not saying I'm going to stop mind.... : ) Maybe it's a Peter Pan/Tinker-bell kinda thing?! Every time some one uses an exclamation mark a fairy get's it's wings or even better a troll gets his first tooth...

What are your favorite smells?

Weird question I know but what are your favorite smells, we are all primal creatures, I believe our sense of smell is arguably our most important of the senses, especially in relation to the capture, retention and retrieval of memories. Nothing for me triggers memories as quickly or vividly as a passing scent. I recently lost my sense of smell because of a bad sinus infection, I genuinely feared it would never return. Neen above anyone can atone to the fact that I smell everything, maybe it's just me, or even just a guy thing but before I eat anything I smell it. As for my favorite smells a few are as follows:

Chamomile and Spiced Apple Tea: (which I'm drinking as I type) Used to drink it a lot in college, while trying to cut back on coffee.

Vanilla Scrub/Soap: Have always loved this scent, not entirely sure why.

Tornado Skies. Any of ye readers who have ever lived in the States will likely know what I mean. The smell of a sticky moody rain-laden grey sky, just brimming with the threat of either a downpour or if lucky/unlucky  a tornado.

Wrights Coal Tar Soap: I love this soap, and it's been so long since I've remembered to buy it, Neen and I picked up a bar today while doing the weekly shop, this scent is what inspired me to write this blog entry. It reminds me of my grandparents house in Renmore, my favorite house in the world.

Old Spice Aftershave: This scent will always remind me of my father, particularly my father as a young man, dark black hair, polo shirt and shorts, sunny day...

Elizabeth Arden Red Door Perfume: Reminds me of my wife, she used to wear it years ago when we started dating. I still love the smell, it will always remind me of her young 16 year old beautiful spirit.

Brut Aftershave: Another that reminds of my father. Brut along with Old spice are the only two male enginnered scents I really like. I really dislike the smell of deodorants like Lynx as well as really harsh aftershaves, they just remind me of locker rooms and smelly sweaty classrooms (I went to an all boys school)

Lego: The smell of a new box of Lego! Especially when sent in the post. My grandmother used to send me Lego every Christmas, enclosed with the package would be a tube of Smarties (British sweets similar to M+M's) It's one of my favorite childhood memories!

Christmas: I love the smell of Christmas, it''s my absolute favorite time of year...I cant believe I forgot to include this in the original list! Wrapping Paper, Cinnamon, Spiced Apple, Christmas Trees and Decoration...

Goin' Fishing!

Sora loves sitting on the terrapin tank. At first I tried relentlessly to stop her but after a while realized I was fighting a losing battle. It's primarily the heat that draws her to it. During the winter it's the warmest place in the house. I occasionally take the small lid on the top off, as on sunny days it can get a bit stuffy in there from the heat generated by the light...I found her like this today, with the tip of her tale lightly caressing the waters surface. As I feed the terrapins by hand they expect any intruding appendages are offering food. One of these days they're going to bite the tip of her tail if she's not careful...and I know from experience that if they think they are munching food they don't let go!
